We are working with the Teaching and Learning Center to offer two hands-on workshops this spring. The first will be Introduction to Geospatial Technologies on Thursday, February 18th at 3:30pm. The second will be Finding and creating spatial data on Thursday, April 22 at 3:30pm. Each workshop will use ESRI’s ArcGIS software and Google Maps for the hands-on examples (though no previous experience is required) and will last approximately 2 hours or until the questions stop coming at me. To register to attend either of these workshops just reply to the email Dr Normandy will be sending out prior to each date or just send her an email with your interest.

Introduction to geospatial technologies
February 18 @ 3:30pm
Geospatial technologies, especially GIS, are becoming more entrenched in every aspect of academia from supporting research and service to providing a platform to teach a array of subject matter, even to supporting the administration and maintenance of an institution. This workshop is the introduction to a series of events that will help faculty and staff become familiar with the potential of geospatial technologies, primarily Google’s Maps and Earth products and ESRI’s ArcGIS.
The Introduction to geospatial technologies workshop will consist of examples of how others are using these technologies and provide hands-on experience with Google Maps and ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop.

Finding and creating spatial data
April 22 @ 3:30pm
All research relies on data, whether gathered specifically for a project or acquired from external sources. For those utilizing location to contextualize their work there is a wealth of data that is available from free crowd sourced information to commercial satellite imagery. This workshop discusses geospatial data types, best use scenarios, and search tips for finding the data that you need.
The Spatial data and you workshop will focus of finding existing data sources, creating spatial data, and hands-on data manipulation with ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop.
